Mumbai: India’s richest and prestigious event of the year, the McDowell Signature Indian Derby, will be staged here on Sunday (Feb. 7), with the prizemoney of over Rs. 2 crores and the winner’s purse being Rs. 1.25 crore.

The biggest sporting and glamour show will be presented over two days and showcased as Derby week-end (Feb. 6 and 7).

Mr. Vivek Jain, Chairman, RWITC Ltd, said: “the McDowell Signature Indian Derby redefines Indian sport. For the first time the winner will take away Rs. 1.25 crore as prize money. India’s best horses and the best riding talent including top international jockeys will participate.

“On the Derby day, the grand bumper prize of a Mercedes Benz will be on offer in a contest of skill which is open to patrons at the venue. On the preceding day too, we will have a car on offer for the public.”

The in-form filly Jacqueline is likely to add Derby to her list of Classics (1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas & Oaks). If she does so she will be the only filly to do so.

Bangalore Derby winner Becket, Onassis and Kolkata Derby winner Bruckner are other top contenders.

Jockey Richard Hughes, who has partnered Jacqueline in her last three Classic wins, has the opportunity to add one more win to his Indian Classics tally. Becket will be ridden by Martin Dwyer while K.Fallon will be seen on Onassis. Paul Mulrennan will ride Bruckner.
