Sundar, the elephant whose cause has been championed by celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, should be transferred to Mathura for treatment, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) pleaded before the Bombay High Court on Monday.
But the government opposed the plea, saying that the elephant was in musth condition, and it was dangerous to move him out at this time. The court has posted the matter for final hearing on March 11.
PETA alleged that Sundar felt threatened by his mahout who used an ankush (rod with hook) to control the animal.
But Additional Government Pleader J S Saluja maintained that the tusker showed aggression due to his musth condition.
