Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday called for review of the recent Supreme Court verdict that said mere membership of a banned organisation would not make a person a criminal.

The court said that unless the member resorted to or incited people to violence or created public disorder by violence he would not be culpable.

“The recent judgment passed by the Supreme Court that supporters of any banned organisation are not punishable by law will embolden the anti-Indian and secessionist forces,” Mr. Gogoi told journalists here.

The Chief Minister said he would take up the matter with the Government of India and hoped that the court would also review the verdict suo motu.
