Several farmers’ organisations have criticised the attempts of some organisations run in the name of farmers to push the seed sector into the total control of the multinational companies.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday on the occasion of the National Safe Food Day, functionaries of several farmers organisations working against genetically modified (GM) crops and for sustainable agriculture said they are totally opposed to the campaign being run by those backed by multinational seed companies that genetically modified crops are the only solution to the impending threat to food security of the country.
They expressed concern over lack of sufficient testing and regulation mechanism for ensuring bio-safety of GM crops.
Absence of independent testing laboratories, need for establishing independent regulatory and monitoring mechanisms are not addressed by the Centre and the State governments during the last three years after a moratorium was fixed on commercial release of Bt brinjal, they said.
The organisations plan to conduct awareness meetings in districts against the misinformation campaign being carried out by seed companies and pro-GM lobby.
