NEW DELHI: Commerce Secretary Gopal Krishna Pillai will take over as Union Home Secretary on June 30.

A seasoned bureaucrat, Mr. Pillai has earlier had a stint as a Joint Secretary in the Home Ministry. He belongs to the Kerala cadre of 1972 batch of the IAS. His appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, official sources said.

Mr. Pillai, who will have a two-year tenure, succeeds Madhukar Gupta, who retires on June 30 after the three-month extension comes to an end. Mr. Pillai will move to the Home Ministry on June 11 and serve as Office on Special Duty till June 30.
