The portals of the Himalayan shrine of Gangotri were closed to pilgrims for winter on Thursday, reports PTI quoting official sources.

The temple, located in the Garhwal hills, was closed at 1 p.m. with the main priest locking the doors in the presence of senior administrative and police officers.

Two other Himalayan shrines – Kedarnath and Yamunotri – will be closed on Friday while the Badrinath temple will be closed on November 17.

These four shrines, comprising ‘Char Dham Yatra', are closed every year in October-November and reopen the next year in April-May as the area remains snow-bound during winter.

The shrines attract lakhs of pilgrims every year during the yatra season from April to November. - PTI
