The Prohibition Enforcement Wing have busted a spurious liquor manufacturing and selling gang operating in Karur and Tiruchi districts and recovered a large quantity of illicit rum. Police have arrested five persons and are on the look out for four others in connection with the case.

Detailing the sequence of events, Karur Superintendent of Police Santhosh Kumar said here on Thursday that following a tip off, PEW police were undertaking vehicle check at Chinnareddipatti on the Kulithalai-Manaparai Highway on Wednesday evening when they intercepted a car. Upon checking it was found that the rear seat was removed and in that place 16 cartons containing 48 bottles of rum were being smuggled.

Police took into custody the car driver C. Sundar (33) of Madurai, and his accomplice A. Karunanidhi (30) of Poigaipatti, Tiruchi district. The contraband was also seized along with the car. Based on the interrogation of the duo police picked up C. Senthil Kumar (36) of Pudukkottai, and R. Neelamani (24) of Valanadu Kaikkatti near Manaparai and recovered 28 cartons containing 48 bottles each filled with rum, spirit, punching machine, some chemical powder used to prepare the spurious liquor, 500 empty bottles and some labels used to parade the illicit liquor as original.

The police party went to Maniyankurichi village in Tiruchi district where they picked up P. Manikkam (48) of Ammachatram Pudur, Manapparai. They also secured spurious rum stored in 192 bottles as also some quantity of spirit from the premises.

The police are on the look out for other suspects who are at large. Special teams have been formed, Mr. Santhosh Kumar said.
