The process of procuring 5.65 lakh laptops for distribution, free of cost, to higher secondary school students and those studying in polytechnics is under way through the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd (ELCOT).
Announcing this, an official release on a meeting chaired by Minister for Information, Special Programme Implementation K.T.Rajenthra Bhalaji here on Wednesday said Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had ordered the distribution of laptops to these students in the current fiscal. The Minister, while reviewing the progress made, urged the officials to speed up the process so that the distribution could be expedited. Under the scheme, 9.07 lakh students of government and government aided colleges were given free laptops in 2011-12. In the next fiscal, Ms.Jayalalithaa had ordered distribution of 7.56 lakh laptops.
