Five persons taken into custody in Mavelikara on suspected links with the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) were remanded in judicial custody on Sunday.

The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court II, Haripad, ordered their remand till Thursday. The police will file a petition before the court on Monday for getting their custody.

Rajesh, 34, of Karivelil Mankamkuzhi in Mavelikara; Shiyas, 23, of Mananvilakara at Kazhakuttam in Thiruvananthapuram; Bahuleyan, 50, of Charuvila of Njarayilkonam; Devarajan, 50, of Kaipuzha in Mayyanad in Kollam; and Gopal, 52, of Rajilpakkom in Chennai and former scientist of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, were arrested from a lodge in Mavelikara on Saturday.

The police said they had been holding a secret meeting and the lodge had been raided on intelligence reports that such meetings would be held in the area.

Two minor girls, daughters of a prominent absconding Maoist leader, present at the meeting were sent to the Juvenile Home, Alappuzha, and handed over to their relatives on Sunday.

The police seized six mobile phones and a laptop from the arrested persons.
