A team of forest personnel, led by B. Ranjith, Range Officer, Meppadi forest range, on Monday arrested five persons for allegedly felling rosewood trees from the Kottappadi section of the forest range under the South Wayanad Forest Division.

Those arrested were identified as Marakkar, 56, of Parammel Veetil at Chundale; Praveen, 21, of Lakshmi House at Veetikkad; Ramesan, 46, of Veetikkattil at Anappara; Sivan, 44, of Chembala at Anappara, and Kunhiraman, 32, of Laksham Veedu Colony at Anchukunnu in the district.

The team seized six pieces of rosewood worth Rs.20,000 kept in the house of Markkar.

The accused were produced before the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court, Sulthan Bathery, which remanded them in judicial custody for 14 days.
