Scores of farmers ransacked the VGTM-UDA office here on Wednesday protesting against the acquisition of agricultural lands purportedly for townships and other urban development projects. They are worried that the VGTM-UDA is acquiring their lands spread across Tadepalli, Mangalagiri and Atmakur, without holding consultations with them and it offered nominal compensation.
A large number of farmers assembled at the VGTM-UDA office in the morning seeking an explanation but there was no one who could address their concerns. The farmers, after staging a demonstration, made it clear that they would not keep quiet if the VGTM-UDA went ahead with land acquisition. It was only a few days ago that the farmers grilled the Guntur RDO and VGTM-UDA officials who tried to make a survey at Tadepalli.
Farmers forced their way into the VGTM-UDA office and broke the furniture and threw away stationery.
The farmers relented only after a town planning officer of VGTM-UDA promised that he would convey their feelings to the UDA vice-chairman.
