A 21-year-old farmer had a miraculous escape from a tiger near Deveera Halli at Basavana Betta range forest in Malavalli on Friday.

The victim, identified as Shantaraju (21) of Kempayyana Doddi, sustained injuries on his head, chest and arm when the tiger attacked him while he was working in the fields.

Shantharaju was admitted to Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) here on Friday evening. “The tiger strayed into my field and suddenly attacked me,” Shantharaju, told The Hindu at the MIMS on Friday night. It tried to drag Shantharaju across the field.

However, he raised an alarm. “On hearing my cries, other farmers, who were working in nearby fields, rushed to rescue me,” he said.

Thankfully, the animal vanished in seconds and the farmers rushed the severely bleeding victim to the government hospital in Malavalli. After administering first aid at Malavalli, he was shifted to the MIMS for further treatment.

According to B.N. Guruprasad, doctor at MIMS, the victim is out of danger. Forest Department officials said that they would initiate measures to trap the tiger.
