The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to form a company to use the services of retired experts for development.
The Consortium of Retired Experts for Development, as the company is to be named, will be chaired by Minister for Planning K. C. Joseph. Secretary (Planning) will its vice-chairman.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media after the Cabinet meeting that the company would have an eight-member board of directors.
The Chief Minister announced that the Under 17 World Cup Football would be held in Kerala in 2017. The Cabinet had approved, in principle, the memorandum of understanding to be signed with Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs in this regard.
It also gave clearance for starting work on the Convention-cum-Exhibition Centre on the land allotted to the Lulu Group at Bolgatty in Kochi by the Cochin Port Trust. Sanction would be accorded to the Kerala State Coastal Development Corporation to implement a housing scheme for fishermen in the State, availing a Rs. 150 crore loan from HUDCO.
Mr. Chandy said that the Centre had sanctioned, in principle, 30 schools under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan in five backward districts of Kerala-- Idukki, Wayanad, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kasaragod. While the Centre would fund standards IX and X, facilities for standard VIII was to be provided by the State government. The Cabinet had approved the proposal and schools were expected to start functioning this year itself.
It also decided to confirm 61 contract staff of Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute at Palode with notional benefit with effect from August 2000. Aided school status would be granted to the orphanage school for deaf and blind at Muttil in Wayanad district.
He said that the Cabinet had sanctioned four lecturer posts each for the newly started courses in Economics and Commerce in Government colleges. In order to strengthen the Vigilance division of the Local Self Government Department, 16 posts had been sanctioned. A sum of Rs 2.98 crore would be provided from the Contingency Fund of the Chief Minister for paying salary arrears of staff working in schools under Area Intensive Programme.
