Special Court for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases on Thursday sentenced a former Income Tax Officer and an Inspector of Income Tax, Tirupur, to two years of rigorous imprisonment.

H. Joseph David, Special Judge for CBI cases, also imposed a fine of Rs. 6,000 on each of them.

According to the prosecution, C.U. Ashokan, Inspector of Income Tax, and N. Gopalsamy, an Income Tax Officer, were working in the Office of Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Tirupur.

A case was registered against them on September 11, 2008, after a complaint was lodged by M. Vasanthi, a resident of Tirupur, that these two had demanded a bribe of Rs. 25,000 for each of them for not taking action on a tax evasion petition against her.

Subsequently, a trap was laid by the Anti Corruption Bureau of the CBI and the two were apprehended while accepting the bribe. The two former IT officials were found guilty by the CBI Court under Sections 7 and 13(2) read with 13(1) (d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
