Weather plays spoilsport

KOLKATA: An Editors' Conference on Infrastructure Issues in the northeast scheduled in Aizawl on Wednesday was called off due to bad weather.

Journalists, Government and PIB officials, including Surface Transport Secretary L.K. Joshi and Principal Information Officer Deepak Sandhu, arrived from Kochi, Chennai, Raipur, Lucknow and Delhi on Tuesday at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport here.

They waited for nearly four hours for the weather to clear in Aizawl.

Low visibility, rain and thick clouds forced Indian to cancel flights to Aizawl in the past three days and a good number of passengers were stranded at the airport here.

Calls to Praful Patel

Officials made frantic calls to Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh, seeking shifting of the conference venue.

Finally, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga called up Mr. Patel and told him that the conference should be put off till the end of monsoon and held only in Aizwal.
