The State Election Commission and the West Bengal government moved fresh applications before the Calcutta High Court here on Monday in connection with the ongoing case between the two sides over the holding of panchayat elections in 17 districts of the State.

While the State government urged the court to direct the Commission to notify May 5 and May 8 as the dates for the polls, the Commission said the announcement of dates was unilateral and ultra vires the Constitution. The commission sought for speedy disposal of the matter so that the panchayat elections could be held on time.

The Commission had filed a petition before the High Court seeking cancellation of dates announced by the State government to hold the elections on April 26 and 30.
