M. Mallikarjun Kharge, Union Minister for Labour and Employment, has appealed to those demanding special status for Bijapur district not to create any hurdle in the smooth passage of the Bill to amend Article 371 of the Constitution in Parliament. Mr. Kharge told presspersons here on Saturday that no one had a different opinion about the backwardness of Bijapur district, but comparing Bijapur with the Hyderabad Karnataka region now was not proper.

The Minister said he did not want to be drawn into a controversy and further complicate the matter.

He said some other taluks in other parts of the State had also been identified as most backward and more backward by the High-Powered Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalance headed by D.M. Nanjundappa.
