Kunal Ghosh says a section of the party is making him a scapegoat in the Saradha scam
A day after he expressed dissent with a section of the party leadership, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kunal Ghosh was grilled by the police for over four hours in connection with his alleged involvement in the Saradha Group scam which left lakhs of investors shorn of their life’s savings.
Mr. Ghosh, who had demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the scam, said on Friday that a section of the TMC leadership was making him a “scapegoat” in the multi-crore scam.
Though the Rajya Sabha MP did not link the summons from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate — which is investigating the scam with “politics” — he did allege that a “conspiracy” had been hatched against him by those involved in the scandal. “A conspiracy has been hatched against me by those who are involved in the scam. But who all are behind the conspiracy I can’t say. I am ready to face any probe. I have full confidence in the police, the detective department and [West Bengal Chief Minister] Mamata Banerjee,” Mr. Ghosh said.
Mr. Ghosh, along with two Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MPs Satabdi Roy and Tapas Pal, had shared the dais with rebel party MLA Sikha Mitra at an event on Friday.
TMC general secretary Mukul Roy said that the disciplinary committee of the party has decided to show-cause the three MPs for anti-party activities.
“Ours is a democratic party and we believe in democratic functioning. The decision has been taken by the disciplinary committee of the party. It is our internal matter,” Mr. Roy said.
Meanwhile Mr. Ghosh said that he was ready to extend all cooperation to the police in connection with the scam.
“Since there was a political attack on me accusing me of involvement in the scam, I have demanded a probe by the CBI,” he said.
Mr. Ghosh, who had earlier been questioned in connection with the scam, said the Deputy Commissioner of Bidhanagar Police (Detective Department) called him over telephone and asked him to present himself for questioning.
Meanwhile, in an order issued by the State Finance Department, the police had been empowered to take action against illegal deposit seeking companies in the State.
The Superintendents and Commissioners of Police have been empowered to effect searches, make seizures and also arrest those associated with such illegal firms.
