The finale of ‘Diabetes Fest 2011' hosted by the Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre (DMDSC), took on carnival atmosphere on Friday as sporting and celluloid stars joined the cause of raising diabetes and obesity awareness among school and college students.

Launching the ‘Diabetes Fest 2011-awards ceremony' Sir Michael Hirst, p resident-elect , International Diabetes Federation, Belgium, said an event of this kind involving children and youth was a first for him as he was accustomed to chairing scientific sessions on diabetes . Celebrated former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram, stressed the importance of the awareness outreach programme on obesity and diabetes among school and college students.

Actors Suhasini Maniratnam, Revathi, Y.Gee. Mahendra, Prasanna and Jiiva, cricketer Lakshmipathy Balaji, were the prominent personalities who gave away trophies to the winning schools and colleges for the various competitions held as part of ‘Diabetes Fest.'

V. Mohan, DMDSC Chairman, said as the number of children, adolescents and youth affected by diabetes was increasing, creating awareness about the ill effects of obesity and diabetes was an urgent need.

The ‘Diabetes Fest 2011,' an inter-school, inter-college cultural program, was held over four months to spread the message of diabetes prevention through the adoption of healthy diet and lifestyle choices. The messages were provided in an easy-to-understand manner to make the learning enjoyable.

R.M. Anjana, Joint Managing Director, DMDSC said over 3,000 students from 111 schools and 30 colleges participated in the events such as dance, skits, painting, vegetable carving, cooking, fancy dress, quiz, elocution and debate.
