Another elephant knocked down by a train near Banarhat in the State’s Jalpaiguri district on May 30 succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, raising the death toll to five.
“An adult female elephant was injured in the incident that occurred between Banarahat and Binnaguri railway stations. She died at the Gorumara National Park where she was being treated,” Chief Conservator of Forest (Wild Life) North V.K. Sood told The Hindu over telephone.
While three elephants, including a calf, died at the spot on May 30, another male elephant died on June 3 taking the toll to four, he added.
All the five elephants were part of the same herd and the Forest Department tried to treat the two which had suffered injuries in the accident, Mr. Sood said.
The accident occurred in the early hours of May 30 when the pachyderms were mowed down by the Mahananda Express. Forest officials alleged the train was not maintaining speed restrictions imposed in the area.
