Several members of the Dalit community took part in a protest demanding better allocation of funds and facilities by the Mangalore City Corporation and the State government.
The protest was held under the aegis of CPI (M)’s Dalita Hakkugala Samiti in front of the office of the Mangalore City Corporation on Monday.
Addressing the protestors, samiti’s District Convenor Krishnappa Konchady said the State government had reduced the amount of funds allocated towards the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes over the years.
The amount has come down to Rs. 1.95 crore from Rs. 2.35 crore in 2006-07. Mr. Konchady said the amount allocated should have increased as it was mandatory to allocate 22.75 per cent of the budgetary allocation for the welfare of SCs and STs.
Mr. Kochady said that Mangalore City Corporation had reduced the amount that was sanctioned for the building of houses from Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 70,000.
Such a drastic cut had rendered building houses difficult for many Dalits, he said. For several years now, the State government had not increased the amount, Rs. 20,000, issued for repairing houses, he said.
