K. Arakesh, Inspector-General of Police (Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshwadeep) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), retired on Friday.

He served the CRPF for 37 years, after joining the force as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1976. He played a key role in the killing of forest brigand Veerappan and was part of the rescue operation when a Bangladesh Biman aircraft was hijacked in 1979.

Post withdrawn

Mr. Arakesh said that after his retirement, the post of IGP (Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep) would be temporarily withdrawn.

“There was another post of IG that was to be created. However, until the government approves it, this post will be temporarily withdrawn,” he said.
