Specific action plan to be worked out by district committees

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has planned a campaign against caste discriminatory practices in 221 temples and religious maths across Karnataka, and 21 temples in particular, where the ‘made snana’ ritual is practised.

Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, V.J.K. Nair, State secretary of the party, said that their sustained campaign against ‘pankti bedha’ (discrimination in serving food based on caste) and ‘made snana’ (people rolling over plantain leaves containing leftovers of the food served to Brahmins) was not targeted at only the Udupi math or the Kukke Subrahmanya temple.

“Our campaign is against all discriminatory practices, which even those who shout slogans of ‘Hindu ondu’ (all Hindus are one) practice with immunity,” said Mr. Nair, adding that specific action plan on the campaign will be worked out by district committees of the party.

He pointed out that temples in Tamil Nadu where Subrahmanya is the presiding deity do not have the practice of ‘made snana’ even though there is a big following for the deity in that State.

“There is a strong social reform movement in Tamil Nadu which makes such a practice impossible,” he said.

Though the 12th Century Veerashaiva movement led by Basaveshwara was a social reform movement, there has been no strong social reform or protest movement in a sustained fashion in pre- and post-Independence periods in the State, said Mr. Nair.

Protest rally

Mr. Nair said that CPI (M) will be organising a massive rally of Dalits at the Freedom Park on February 12 in which over 15,000 people will participate.

Maruti Manpade, member of the State Secretariat of the party, said that the rally will put forward several demands, including filling up of backlog posts and proper spending of the Special Component Plan funds.
