The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday demanded a judicial probe into the death of an activist who allegedly died in police custody.
Karim Gazi was picked up by the police from Kultali area in the South 24 Parganas district on Sunday.
His family members alleged that he was beaten severely in custody and then taken to a state-run hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Departmental proceedings have been initiated into the death, a senior police official said.
The police said that Mr. Gazi was picked up on suspicion of involvement in a criminal case.
Alleging that the police were acting on the diktat of the Trinamool Congress leaders, Sujan Chakraborty, secretary of the South 24 Parganas district committee of the CPI(M) told The Hindu that the party demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident.
