The Kerala High Court, on Thursday, confirmed the Thiruvananthapuram Sessions Court order awarding a sentence of 10 years to a tuition teacher for raping a girl student who committed suicide subsequently.

The court upheld the verdict of the lower court while dismissing an appeal filed by the convict, Ajiram of Thiruvanantahpuram. The prosecution case was that the convict, who took tuitions for the girl, used to sexually exploit her from Class V. In fact, she had an infatuation with the accused. A year and a half after she reached Class X, the girl had proposed marriage to him.

However, he declined her request. The girl then committed suicide by setting herself on fire in 2001.Ajiram had also been charged with committing rape on her.
