NEW DELHI: The government has decided to set up a consultative mechanism on de-addiction at the national level. A national consultative committee on de-addiction and rehabilitation (NCCDR) is to be constituted.

It would advise the Central and State governments on issues connected with drug demand reduction, especially education and awareness building, de-addiction and rehabilitation. Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Meira Kumar would be its chairperson and the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan the vice-chairperson.

The NCCDR would also have other ex-officio members, representatives of the State governments and Union territory administrations, drug abuse prevention and social workers, and media. It would advise the Central and State governments on the gamut of issues related to drug abuse prevention, de-addiction, rehabilitation and harm reduction.

The Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry has been implementing the Scheme of Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drugs) Abuse for identification, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts through voluntary organisations.
