A police constable attached to the S.R. Puram Police Station was arrested for allegedly molesting a 17-year-old dalit girl in the police station premises on the night of February 2. There are, however, conflicting reports about the incident.
Reports quoting the relatives of the victim said the cop, Gopi (33), allegedly outraged the modesty of the girl after detaining her in the station allegedly for “some more interrogation” in connection with the “elopement case” for which her entire family was brought to the station.
Her relatives also complained that the police initially refused to register a case against the cop but had to act after two days, following “pressure” from the Dalit organisations.
But police sources however expressed their surprise and reservations over the relatives of the girl taking two days to report the matter to Superintendent of Police, Chittoor, Kanthi Rana Tata. The SP is said to have asked the Additional SP, Chittoor, Annapoorna Reddy, to probe the case and submit a report immediately.
