With Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat confirming that the complaint lodged against the former CPI(M) Kannur district secretary P. Sasi is related to sexual harassment, the Congress has dared Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to register a police complaint against Mr. Sasi.
“The CPI(M) and the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) leaders are trying to hoodwink voters by assuring them that all those involved in sexual harassment cases and other scams will be brought to book. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan should spell out whether he has the fortitude to register a police case against Mr. Sasi,” Congress spokesperson M.M. Hassan told a press conference here on Saturday.
Mr. Achuthanandan, who had been vociferously championing the cause of women by asserting that stringent punitive action will be initiated against those involved in sexual harassment cases, should now show determination to register a police case against Mr. Sasi, in the light of Mr. Karat terming the complaint of a “grave nature,” Mr. Hassan, who was here to address a series of election meetings, said.
If the LDF government could swiftly institute a high-level police inquiry against Indian Union Muslim League leader P.K. Kunhalikutty on the basis of accusations by his close relative K.A. Rauf, Mr. Achuthanandan on the basis of Mr. Karat's remarks should now initiate legal action against Mr. Sasi, Mr. Hassan said.
Mr. Achuthanandanhad made the sexual harassment issue a major poll plank of the LDF government though he could not bring to book the so-called VIP involved in the Kiliroor case, Mr. Hassan alleged.
