The Congress on Friday staged a walkout and announced its decision to boycott the first session of the 11th Tripura Assembly in protest against “relentless atrocities against its supporters.”

Earlier, all 10 Congress members were present when the session got under way here in the morning with the speech of Governor D.Y. Patil (since transferred to Bihar). However, at 12.40 they walked out.

“At least four of our supporters were killed and scores injured so far in violence spearheaded by CPI(M) cadres,” Congress spokesperson and MLA Asish Saha alleged. He said the violence continued unabated even after Chief Minister Manik Sarkar warned of action against the perpetrators.

Another MLA and PCC president Sudip Roy Burman said the party was protesting the “politically motivated violence and inaction on the part of the government.”Mr. Sarkar has given repeated calls for ending violence. “I would not get involved in the blame game but violence should stop immediately,” he told the CPI(M) victory rally recently.
