In yet another incident of campus violence in West Bengal, the Principal of a State-run college at Jhargram in Paschim Medinipur district was assaulted on Saturday allegedly by supporters of the student wing of the Trinamool Congress
Jhargram Raj College Principal Kishore Kumar Rai and a few other teachers were assaulted when they tried to intervene during a scuffle between two groups of students.
“I thought it was my moral responsibility to intervene in the altercation between a section of students along with some outsiders and those residing in the college hostel,” Mr. Rai said.
District vice-president of student wing of Trinamool Congress Soumen Acharya attacked him inside the college, Mr. Rai added.
The college authorities had called a meeting of different student unions prior to the holding of student elections at the institution when the incident occurred. Two students were also injured in the scuffle and were admitted to a district hospital.
“I have heard about the matter. I will collect information from the Principal and take necessary action,” Higher Education Minister, Bratya Basu said when asked by journalists about the incident.
