A lit cigarette butt ignited the mattress of Prabhu (30), a manual labourer living in G.M Palya, suffocating him to death on Thursday night. The Byappanahalli police suspect he was inebriated. He had also closed the door and windows of his room. His body was found the following body by his mother Vasamma who had the door broken down.

Knocked down

Rajesh Krishna (35), government employee and a resident of Thambuchettypalya, died when a goods carrier rear-ended his motorcycle near the T.C. Palya junction on Old Madras Road, K.R. Puram traffic police said.

Driver Narasimha Reddy (25) was arrested and the vehicle seized.

Big burglary

Thieves broke into the house of Patricia Prabhu in Indiranagar and stole valuables worth Rs. 82 lakh. The Indiranagar police said the house had been locked for about a month as Ms. Prabhu was away in Australia.

The break-in came to light when, on her return on Wednesday, she found that ornaments, including a diamond necklace and Rs. 2 lakh in cash, were missing.

The police think the intruders gained entry through a first-floor window which was broken.

Unidentified body

The body of an unidentified woman aged around 40 was found in the drain beside the godown of Bharatiya Cement factory in Kothanoor police station limits on Thursday afternoon.

The police said one of the employees at the godown, who had observed the woman sitting near the pavement in the morning, spotted her in the drain around 1 p.m.
