The sacristans, who ring the bells manually at St. Francis Xavier's Church in Kaloor, can now take a break.

Automated bells

The traditional rope has been replaced by an automated press-button bell brought from Italy. Francis Kallarakkal, Archbishop of Varapuzha, will officially inaugurate the new bells in connection with the festival celebrations of the church on Wednesday.

Judiz Panakkal, vicar of the church, said here on Monday that Alberto Tonynelly, an expert in church bells from Italy, had installed the new system. “Four automated bells were brought from Italy on November 12. Mr. Tonynelly, who owns a company manufacturing church bells in Italy, reached here on November 17 and his team finished the work by November 22,” he said.

Fr. Panakkal said that the idea to install automated church bells came during a trip to Italy in November, 2010.

“We were impressed by the artistic excellence and the sound of the automated church bells installed in one of the churches under the Florence diocese in Italy,” he said.

The church bells installed at St. Francis Xavier's Church here weigh around 540 kg. The schedule of the church ceremonies is included in the automated system.
