Reiterates its demand for Manmohan’s resignation on coal issue

Provoked by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s remark that the projected Rs. 1.86-lakh crore loss in coal block allocation would also turn out to be a fancy number, the BJP has reiterated its demand for resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar dubbed Mr. Chidambaram’s comment ‘highly irresponsible’ and charged him with indulging in ‘brazen insinuation’ of the Comptroller and Auditor-General.

The entire monsoon session of Parliament was washed out with the BJP-led NDA stalling the proceedings on three specific demands, including the resignation of Dr. Singh. As some of the NDA constituents got restive towards the end of the session, the BJP dropped the resignation demand as a condition to allow Parliament to function.

Taking exception to the continued attack on the CAG by Congress Ministers, Mr. Javadekar said the Congress could not get away by mocking the auditor. “It is unfortunate that this kind of a statement has come from the Finance Minister that too a couple of days before the winter session begins.”
