MUMBAI: The Mumbai police on Saturday filed a supplementary charge sheet in the Ajit Dewani murder case against extradited gangster Abu Salem and co-accused Shah Alam. This is one of the eight cases based on which Salem was extradited from Portugal last year. Salem allegedly conspired to kill Ajit Dewani, secretary of film actor Manisha Koirala, over an extortion dispute.
A special court designated for cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) is hearing the trial. A few witnesses have already been examined. After Salem was interrogated, Shah Alam was arrested. The other accused facing trial are: Upendra Singh, Nizamuddin Abdul Rauf, Deepak Singh, Akhilesh Singh, Ayub Ibrahim Patel, and Sahiblal Giri.
Salem has been charged with various offences punishable under the MCOCA, the Arms Act, and the Indian Penal Code.
Ajit Dewani was shot at point blank range in 2001 at his office in Andheri, a western suburb in Mumbai. Abu Salem is also being tried in the Pradeep Jain murder case.
