The government has instituted higher education scholarships for girls from Muslim, Latin Christian, and Converted Christian communities in the State on the basis of the recommendations of the Sachar Committee report.
The scholarships will be named after the former Chief Minister C.H. Mohammed Koya.
Girls pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including professional ones, in government and aided institutions will be eligible for the scholarships. Those residing in hostels will get stipend.
Undergraduate girl-students will get Rs.4,000 a year and postgraduate students, Rs.5,000.
Those pursuing professional courses will get Rs.6,000. The maximum hostel stipend for a year will be Rs.12,000.
Applicants should be studying in Kerala and should have secured 50 per cent marks in the qualifying examinations.
Their annual family income should be below Rs.4.5 lakh. They should have a savings account at any of the branches of the State Bank of India, State Bank of Travancore, Federal Bank, and the South Indian Bank.
The first notification for the scholarship will be published in November.
