‘Level of economic deprivation in the country is so high'
‘UPA government has completed one year rule of corruption'
KOLKATA: The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at the Centre must think of a strategy beyond Operation Green Hunt to counter the threat from Left wing extremism, Gurudas Dasgupta, leader of the Communist Party of India in the Lok Sabha, said here on Wednesday.
The level of economic deprivation and poverty in the country was so high that merely action by security forces as a part of Operation Green Hunt would not be able to defeat the Maoists. They would always be able to capitalise on the problems of the common man and continue to operate in the affected areas, said Mr. Dasgupta.
He decried the first year of the second UPA government as “the completion of one year of rule of corruption in India.”
Mr. Dasgupta said that within one year of the government, corruption charges were levelled against six Ministers.
Demanding an impartial inquiry into the allegations, Mr. Dasgupta said: “The Prime Minster should ask them to resign in the way he has asked Shashi Tharoor to resign.”
Mr. Dasgupta said that when the matter was raised in Parliament, Union Finance Minster Pranab Mukherjee assured the House that the Prime Minster would address the members on the matter. But, the Prime Minister made no statement in the House and dismissed the demand outside Parliament.
The inquiry into the allegations of corruption should be able to gather evidence against those responsible.
