Minister for Law K.M. Mani has taken strong objection to Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid's statement that the Centre could not intervene in the Mullaperiyar dam issue since the case was pending before the Supreme Court.

Inaugurating the Kerala Congress (M) district meet at Thiruvalla on Friday, Mr. Mani said the Centre should intervene in the issue and convince the Tamil Nadu government on the need to construct a dam to protect the people of Kerala.

The reported statement of Janata Party leader Subramaniam Swamy that Kerala would not be permitted to construct a new dam in Mullaperiyar, amounted to contempt of court prima facie, as the case was pending before the Supreme Court, he said.
