Unclaimed cash to the tune of Rs.21,700 was seized following a joint raid conducted by the Department of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) and the Inspection Cell Office (ICO), Vellore at the health sub-centre (HSC) in Kangeyanallur Road here on Monday.
According to Balasubramanian, Deputy Superintendent of Police, DVAC, the raid was carried out by a DVAC team and a team of the ICO led by Inspector Abdul Haq following information that the voluntary health nurses (VHNs) were collecting amounts ranging from Rs.600 to Rs.1000 each by way of bribe from the beneficiaries of the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Assistance Scheme, under which each beneficiary is eligible for payment of Rs.6000. When the two teams went to the HSC in Kangeyanallur Road and enquired about the cash kept in the premises, the VHNs claimed ignorance about the cash.
Therefore, the cash was seized as unclaimed.
The DSP said that the DVAC enquiries revealed that whenever the HSC receives cheques under the scheme for disbursement to beneficiaries, the VHNs used to ask the beneficiaries to visit the HSC and collect the bribe money from them before the concerned doctor arrives to distribute the cheques for Rs.6000 each.
On Monday, the cheques had been distributed to 25 beneficiaries by the time the vigilance and ICO teams visited the HSC.
