The Tiruchi City Police has registered a case against former Transport Minister and DMK Tiruchi district secretary K.N. Nehru, the party's Tiruvarur district secretary Poondi Kalaivanan, former Tiruchi Deputy Mayor M. Anbazhagan and a few others for assaulting and abusing a jail Warder in the Central Prison campus here on Monday.
The episode took place when Mr. Nehru, against whom a string of land grab cases have been booked by the Anti Land Grabbing Cell of the Tiruchi City Police, along with his party functionaries went to meet the DMK former MLA Kalyanam lodged in the Central Jail here.
Police and prison sources said the Warder deployed at the jail's main entry gate stopped Mr. Nehru's car and other vehicles carrying party functionaries when they came to meet the jailed former MLA in the morning.
Even while the Warder asked the former Minister to wait for some time to get instructions from his superiors in order to let them in, an apparently irked Mr. Nehru allegedly abused the prison official.
Upon noticing the car of the Superintendent of Prison of Special Prison for Women, Tiruchi, coming out from the prison campus, the Warder opened the gate. At that moment, Mr. Nehru proceeded in his car towards the prison, the sources said.
The party functionaries allegedly abused the prison official, threatened and pushed him down causing injury in his hand.
Acting on a complaint preferred by the injured Jail Warder L. Veeramani, the K.K. Nagar police registered a case against Mr. Nehru and others . The car used by Mr. Nehru while visiting the Central Prison was later seized and teams were on the look out for the former Minister.
DMK functionaries who assembled at Mr. Nehru's office in Thillai Nagar where his car was seized in the evening raised slogans against the State Government.
