Eminent cardiologist and former Director of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, Sheikh Jalal-ud-din, got critically injured and both of his personal security officers died in a militant attack at Pampore on Thursday.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, South Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said at least two militants fired bursts from their AK-47 rifles when Dr. Jalal, escorted by two PSOs, was walking from his ancestral house to a condolence meeting in Nambalbal neighbourhood at Pampore, 14 km from here. While Dr. Jalal was severely injured, his PSOs, Tariq Ahmad Bhat and Pervez Ahmad Wani, died in the attack.

Dr. Jalal was admitted to SKIMS where doctors performed multiple surgical procedures on him. Doctors told The Hindu that Dr. Jalal’s left eye had been damaged severely and the right eye partially. A bullet was removed from the brain. He was also found hit in the chest and abdomen. Official sources said police and security forces suspect the attack could be the handiwork of the Lashkar-e-Taiba.
