K. Deivendra Singh (43) alias ‘Bunty Chor’, who is in police custody since Thursday evening, is baffling investigators with his replies such as, “I am not a criminal and I am an avatar of Lord Krishna carrying out his instructions conveyed to me in my dreams” and “Give me only fruits to beat the heat”.

These statements are from an accused said to be involved in 212 cases in Delhi and in over 300 cases in other parts of the country, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Bunty was secured by the Kerala police from a hotel in Pune recently in connection with the theft of a car worth Rs 28 lakh from the posh bungalow of an NRI businessman in Thiruvananthapuram.

Deivendra Singh drove the stolen car up to Hosur and on sensing that the police were chasing him, he abandoned the car and fled on January 21.

When the Kerala police interrogated him, Bunty confessed to his involvement in a chain snatching case and another attempt in Coimbatore on January 15. This resulted in Tamil Nadu police getting the accused from Thiruvananthapuram. He was produced before the magistrate who granted two-days of police custody.

Bunty was not just baffling the police with his typical statements. He refused to sign his name as Deivendra Singh before the Magistrate on Thursday and insisted that he be seen as the reincarnation of Lord Krishna.

Since the accused has a history of assaulting police and escaping and making attempts to escape from custody, the premises where the interrogation is being done by an Assistant Commissioner, two inspectors and two sub-inspectors is being guarded by a dozen police personnel with automatic weapons.

According to the police, he confessed to his involvement in snatching the chain of Ranganayaki (50) on Avarampalayam Road and another on Punithavathi in Race Course on the same day.

He targeted posh bungalows and top hotels. Bunty spoke very little and mostly in Hindi.
