A fire broke out after a small explosion onboard a chemical tanker berthed at a Mumbai Port Trust jetty here on Saturday morning, injuring three crew members of the ship. The Directorate- General of Shipping said the blaze was immediately brought under control.
Royal Diamond 7 , a Korean-owned, Marshal Island-flagged vessel, was readying itself to sail out of the New Pir Pau berth, the chemical jetty belonging to the Mumbai Port Trust, when the explosion took place in the fore of the tanker, officials said.
“Fortunately, the vessel, which was earlier carrying a consignment of 2,000 tonnes of Toulene imported by Aegis Chemicals Ltd, had just finished the discharge operation. It was planning to move out after the operation at around 11.30 a.m. when the fire was noticed,” an official said.
Fire tenders of the Port Fire Service were immediately pressed into service.
