Members of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Bijapur city general secretary Shivarudra Bagalkot took out a rally and staged a dharna at Basaveshwar Circle here on Tuesday demanding immediate recall of Governor H.R. Bhardwaj.
Over 200 BJP workers including the City Municipal Council members and several officer-bearers of the party took out a procession from Gandhi Chowk to Basaveshwar Circle holding placards and raised slogans against Governor H.R. Bhardwaj and the Union Government.
Describing the Governor's recommendation of President's rule in the State as politically motivated, the agitators alleged that the Governor was working on the behest of the Congress high command and the Janata Dal (Secular) leaders in the State. “Since the BJP came to power in 2008, the Congress and the JD (S) have been trying to unseat the democratically elected BJP Government, which enjoys the support of 121 out of the 225 MLAs in the Assembly”, they alleged.
The Governor's recommendation was against the spirit of the Constitution, they said adding that the Centre should recall the Governor immediately.
The agitators submitted a memorandum of demands to President Prathiba Patil through the office of Bijapur Deputy Commissioner S.S. Pattanshetty.
