Flays Railway Ministry for the inordinate delay

Coimbatore: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has flayed the railway administration for the inordinate delay in completing the rail overbridge construction work at Valankulam near Ukkadam.

The work for construction of rail overbridges across Tiruchi Road at Ondipudur and at Ukkadam along the bypass road at Valankulam should have been completed by 2005. A release from BJP State secretary G.K.S. Selvakumar accused the Congress-led Central Government of having meted out a step motherly treatment to Coimbatore that resulted in the inordinate delay in completing these bridges. Only recently, the rail overbridge at Ondipudur was thrown open easing the traffic pressure on Tiruchi Road that was diverted via Irugur. The State and Central Ministers had promised that the bridge at Ukkadam would be completed by June. With the construction of the bridge progressing at a snail’s pace, the level crossing could not be used for diverting vehicular traffic and vehicles from the City towards Ukkadam, Pollachi and Palakkad areas had to pass through the congested Town Hall area.

As a result the City traffic was thrown out of gear during peak hours on all days. If the railway administration did not complete the construction of the Ukkadam bridge on a warfooting the BJP would launch an agitation in front of the Central Government offices, Mr. Selvakumar said.
