BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya has requested Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to take up special schemes for development of slums in towns and cities and extend the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission to all towns.

Funds sought

He suggested the setting up of a Slum Development Board and allocation of Rs. 1,000 crore to it for provision of basic amenities in local bodies.

Instead of divesting powers and funds to local bodies as per 73 {+r} {+d} and 74 {+t} {+h} amendments to the Constitution, the government was incapacitating them. As a result, the local bodies were unable to meet the funds required for even drinking water, sanitation, drainage, roads and other basic amenities.

Open letter

In an open letter to the Chief Minister on Saturday, the BJP leader also demanded the government to roll back the power tariff hike. He alleged that the State government had not even taken the legislature into confidence before effecting power tariff and property tax increase. The two hikes would enable the government get an additional Rs.2,000 crore in revenue a year.
