Congress MP from Vijayawada Lagadapati Rajagopal has said the Congress high command would take a decision on Telangana statehood issue only when consensus is reached.

“The same thing was mentioned in the election manifesto. Nobody is opposed to the statehood issue but the views of all sections will be taken before any decision is announced,” Mr. Rajagopal told reporters after meeting the PCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana at Gandhi Bhavan on Monday.

He said there was demand for 24 new States and Congress party’s stand on the smaller states was States Reorganisation Commission. He pointed out that like Telangana, there was demand for Vidarbha. Former UP Chief Minister Mayawati had passed a resolution in the Assembly favouring four States.

A group of TDP leaders from Jaggaiahpet in Krishna district led by the Vijayawada MP joined the Congress in the presence of the PCC president.

Asked about the resignations of MLAs from the party, he said none from Krishna district has done so. “If any legislator forwards his resignation, it should be accepted immediately,” he said.
