Sri Ganeshwar Avadhoot Maharaj Math in Chowli village in Bidar taluk, where three devotees ended their lives on Monday, was “facing a severe financial distress” and devotees of the math had requested the government to take over the administration of the math.

Sources in the government told The Hindu that devotees and a couple of seers held discussions with the Bidar district administration on taking over the math by the Muzrai Department. The district administration told the math seers to submit a detailed proposal, which would be forwarded to the Muzrai Department, to take a decision.

The proposal remained at the discussion level. The math had not submitted the proposal to the district administration. The district administration has suggested to math seers to form a committee comprising a few seers and devotees to carry on with the daily activities of the math, a government official said.

The district authorities also advised the math to appoint one of the seers as the head to take care of the administration, the official said. The government has decided to take necessary steps to conduct a probe into the suicide of the devotees.
