There is a deliberate attempt being made by the Union government to derail the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport project, CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Friday.

Addressing a gathering after participating in a ‘human chain’ formed by the Left Democratic Front to protest against the alleged move to scuttle the port project, he said there was a conspiracy to disrupt the project and it was time for the people to be united in their fight to resist such a move.

The Union government might have deemed it necessary to allocate Rs.7,500 crore towards development of the Tuticorin port but it should not come in the way of building the port at Vizhinjam, which was considered an ideal location for a deepwater port due to its geographical location, he said.

He urged the Union government to remove the veil of secrecy surrounding the project.

Hundreds of people participated in the human chain along the 18-km Vizhinjam-Secretariat stretch .
