A bank cashier was taken into custody for allegedly siphoning off funds from the savings accounts of several consumers of Andhra Bank Gundi Gopalraopeta branch in Ramadugu mandal here.

The incident came to light recently when senior bank officers found misappropriation of Rs 1.25,400 during routine check of bank records.

The Ramadugu police said that the bank cashier D. Mallesham, who was working at the Andhra Bank branch since long, entered in the customer's passbook a deposit of Rs. 60,000 made by the latter, but deposited only Rs. 20,000 in the bank account and swindled the remaining Rs. 40,000.

The bank authorities have initiated an inquiry and assured customers, including farmers and others, of recovering the amount from the cashier. Sources say that amount to the tune of several lakhs was siphoned off by the cashier over a period of time.
