Hours after 21 Bangladeshi children escaped from a home for destitute children at Balurghat in the State’s Dakshin Dinajpur district on Thursday, 19 of them were apprehended while trying to cross the Indo- Bangladesh border.

“Nineteen children were apprehended near the border at Hili. The children ran away in the morning and were found at the border in the afternoon,” Prasoon Bandopadhyay, Superintendent of Police, Dakshin Dinajpur, told The Hindu over telephone from the district.

The children had fled from Subhyan, a State-run home for destitute children. According to the home authorities, they had managed to remove bricks from a portion of the home’s boundary wall.

Even in the past, there have been incidents of children running away from this home. Ten Bangladeshi children had fled from the home in February, 2010.

Questions over the dismal infrastructure and lack of sensitivity in treating children at State-run homes have been raised in the past as well.
